She has a Bachelor of Education from the University of Saskatchewan, an Early Childhood Services Diploma from the University of Alberta and a Masters Degree from the University of Calgary. During a one-year leave of absence, Mrs. Doraty worked at Rocky View Schools as Learning Support and a System Coach. She was also nominated for and completed the Administrative training program and worked to help set up a cutting edge school in Airdrie that began in the central office space.
Mrs. Doraty brings to this class the ability to teach young children to read, write and spell using a strong phonetic based program. This program will provide the children with tools for reading, writing and spelling that will serve them well throughout their lives. Beginning with the basic sounds in the English language, the students will learn to recognize phonograms by sight and sound. They will then be taught how to build those sounds into meaningful words and from words into sentences. As reading and writing are so closely associated, the children will learn to write words and sentences with correct spelling as they build their word vocabulary. There will be a strong emphasis on neatness and penmanship. A scaffolding method of teaching will be used, which means that students will be expected to review and practice material learned in classes during the week, so that new lessons can be built upon past lessons. Each new lesson will begin with review, move into new material and then practice. It is the goal of this class to provide students with skills that will serve them well throughout life. Families will need to purchase a set of phonogram cards for review at home. These will be available for purchase at the first class.
